Margarine is made from liquid vegetable oil. To make the oil more solid at room temperature, hydrogen is added. This hydrogenation process causes the naturally occurring cis form of fat to change into the trans form of fat. Trans fats are associated with a higher risk of coronary artery disease by increasing your bad or LDL cholesterol and decreasing your amount of HDL or good cholesterol. Instead use real dairy butter is a better choice. Just don’t overdo it because butter is a very calorie dense food. Use your imagination with other alternatives such as coconut butter, hummus or mashed avocado which can add a nice little exotic flavouring too.
4. POTATO CHIPS
The crispy texture, fat and saltiness of potato chips makes them “hyper palatable”. One handful is never enough – you just gotta keep going. But that’s where the problem is, it’s too easy to add a lot of empty calories to your diet by snacking on potato chips. If you have a craving for something crunchy then satisfy it with a more nutrient rich choice such as roast almonds, bagel chips or mini rice cakes.
3. MAYONAISE
Vegetable oil, sugar, salt and emulsifying agents. There is nothing that we need here for optimum performance. Even the home made version has its own risks. The raw egg yolks that are used can be a source of salmonella food poisoning. Hold on the mayo!
2. SODA POP
Fizzy soft drinks can carry an incredible amount of empty calories in the form of sugar. One can of soda pop can have 35 – 50 grams of sugars dissolved in it. That’s the equivalent of about 8 – 12 teaspoons of table sugar per can. Not only is all that sugar bad for your teeth, the carbonation that makes soda pop fizzy is quite acidic and can further erode your tooth enamel.
1. PROCESSED DELI MEATS
This stuff is nasty. Not only are processed deli meat products high in fat and salt. Worse yet, they contain sodium nitrite. This food additive changes the natural grey colour of junk meats to a nice, delicious pink or red colour. Not a bad thing. It also increase the shelf life of the product – also not a bad thing, but when the sodium nitrite hits the stomach acid or is heated during cooking, it is converted into carcinogenic nitrosamines. These are strongly associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Now that’s a pain in the ass nobody wants. So ditch those deli meats for good.
